Castle Cemetery
Okfuskee Co., OK
Directions to Cemetery: From I-40 and State Route 48, turn NORTH and proceed until you come to the intersection of State Routes 48 and 56. (There's a flashing light at the intersection) Proceed NORTH. The cemetery is on the East side of the road. It is fenced, but NOT locked. (Don't forget to close and latch the gate when you leave.)The cemetery appears to be in fair condition, however it could use some regular lawn care. Be sure to bring some bug spray, high-top boots and watch out for cow-patties. It gets very boggy after it rains so don't drive all the way in, if you don't have to. There's no real turning around room, and the driving area that exists is in poor condition. I usually just park in the entrance drive and walk in.
There were many field stones along with areas that appear to be unmarked graves. The older stones have not been maintained and there are a large number of them that have fallen over or are partially sunken and/or tilted. Bring your brush, gloves and tracing material.
I have tried to find records as to who is buried here, but was informed that the old records were destroyed in a fire. I have walked the cemetery and gathered these names and will be going through old newspapers later looking for obituaries. One item of interest that I will definitely be researching is the fact that the cemetery was moved sometime in the late 1920's or 1930's.
