KEENER CEMETERY
Information provided by William Jack Whitener
The information was transcribed directly from headstones, markers
and information personally known to him and others.
Keener Cemetery is located in the Lost City Community of Hulbert township. Take the Lost City Road north out of Hulbert to the rural Lost City School. Approximately one fourth mile past the school, turn left (west) at the intersection and travel nine tenths mile and come to Keener Baptist Church on the right. The cemetery is located behind the church.
Keener Cemetery began as the Keener Family Cemetery during the last decade of the 19th century. Many Keener ancestors were living in this area during this period and were allotted land adjacent to the present day Keener Church and Cemetery pursuant to a Federal Act known as the Dawes Commission Act. The land on which the cemetery and church now occupy was donated to the Keener Family by a Keener recipient of this parcel of land under the allotment act. Since then, the cemetery has expanded and evolved into Keener Community Cemetery. Most of the persons interred here are members of the extended Keener Family, consisting of cousins, in-laws, etc.There are approximately 50
grave sites marked only with common stones some of which the identifying data
has become illegible while others bear no identifying marks at all. There are
also a number of depressions in the ground indicating additional sites. Many or
most of these sites had identifying information at one time but became lost or
deteriorated over time. When I was a boy in the 1940s and 50s, my mother would
tell me the names of some of these persons, when they died and how they were
related to us. It didn’t seem important then. The identity of persons resting at
these sites is apparently lost forever now and are known only but to God.
