Will Ross, who was shot early Saturday morning near Hales store at the forks of Bobby [probably should be “Boggy” – transcriber’s note] by Reece Gilmore, died Sunday morning at one o’clock in Boswell. His body was taken to Paris Sunday afternoon and buried there the same day.
Gilmore was placed under a bond of two thousand dollars Sunday by County Attorney Warren who went to Boswell and made an investigation of the trouble. The bond was easily made, a number of people of worth and substance in Boswell volunteering to subscribe their names to the document.
His preliminary examination was set for Friday next in Boswell. It is the general opinion of the community in which the shooting occurred that Gilmore shot only in self defense when he placed with unerring accuracy three bullets in the stomach of Goss. Last winter the fracas between the two, which was mentioned in the account of the shooting Sunday’s Husonian, was forced by Ross. Gilmore, it is said calmly removed is over coat and gave a sound thrashing to his assailant at that time. Gilmore has a good reputation and standing in the Boswell country and among the merchants there.
RISS GILMORE RELEASED SATURDAY
PRELIMINARY HEARING IN BOSWELL SUCH AS TO MOVE COUNTY ATTORNEY TO DISCHARGE
Evidence All in Favor of Defendant. Showed Him As Fighting in Self Defense.

Daily Husonian June 27, 1915 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Following the examination of the witnesses in the preliminary hearing of Riss Gilmore at Boswell this morning the state moved to the court that the defendant be discharged from further trial. This the justice S.H. Downing, ordered.
Just one week ago Saturday morning about 1 o’clock Riss Gilmore was riding to Hale’s store 11 miles north of Boswell where he was met in the road by Will Ross, accompanied by four men, one of whom was Alvin Ross, his brother.
According to most of the testimony Will Ross started the argument and was the aggressor from the first. It seems that he dismounted from his horse and ran up to Gilmore and attempted to strike him with the butt of his six shooter. Then the shooting began, Ross firing the first shot. When it was all over Ross had remounted and rode about seventy five years and fell from his horse. Gilmore ran to a neighbor’s house. Ross died twenty-four hours later from three wounds in his stomach. Gilmore was arrested and placed under bond.
The results of the preliminary hearing seemed to give general satisfaction in Boswell where Gilmore seems to have the sympathy of all.
