Oakes Cemetery Association


October 9, 2004

     The first meeting of the Oakes Cemetery Association, hosted by Syble Makerney, was held at the Sawyer Senior Citizens Center in Sawyer, Oklahoma October 9th, 2004.  There were 34 descendants of Thomas Wilson Oakes that attended.  Officers chosen for the association were Lola (Ruby) Oakes Withrow & Bobby Frost of Hugo.  Special guests were family historian Vera Shelton of Hugo and Mr. & Mrs. Bill Grant of Hugo who are well known by all Blue Grass fans.  Bill sung one of his recorded songs he wrote of his family called  "Monarch of Time".  Edna Oakes Burndt passed out eleven wooden clocks that she hand made from an old oak tree  The tree was from the Oakes Family Cemetery cut down by family members  Scott, Jerry, Shawn Makerney and Randy Withrow. Burial in the Oakes Family Cemetery is open to any member of the Oakes Family. The Oakes Family Cemetery Association can be contacted at 326-3764.
