Hundreds Of Friends Pay Last Tribute To Pioneer

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for John Allen Pennington, who died at his home here early Saturday morning after an illness of about seven months.
The services, were held at the residence at 405 East Brown street, with Reverend W. Moran, in charge and the Senner Funeral home in charge of arrangements.
Interment followed in the Mount Olivet Cemetery.
The deceased was born August 14th, 1860 in Cooper county Missouri. He was married to Miss Martha Anne White, September 1892, and to this union there were born seven children, three boys and four girls, six of whom are surviving.
They are, Harvey J. Antlers, Mrs. G.E. Shelton, Hugo; Mrs. W.B. Moran, Shawnee; Mrs. B.E. Pitts, Boswell; John Allen Jr., Oklahoma City; Mrs. J.S. Grifftih [sic], Roswell, New Mexico. In addition to these there were 13 grandchildren, one great grand child surviving along with one brother, J.M. Pennington, of Sherman, Texas, and a sister, Mrs. Creed Norris of Kentucky.

Pioneer Citizen Died After Long Illness Saturday A.M.

John A. Pennington, died at his home at 405 East Brown Saturday morning after an illness of seven months.
Funeral services will be conducted at the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Reverend W. Moran of Boswell in charge, and the Senner's funeral home directing.
Pall bearers will be Willie Patterson, Claude Kimmons, Willard Blair, Guy Burrous, all of Hugo, C.C. Pitts of Boswell and Bud Gowsend of Chicota, Texas.
Mr. Pennington was born August 14, 1869 in Cooper county Missouri. He moved with his father's family to Cumberland county, Kentucky and remained there until he was about 21 years of age.
He then moved to Red River county, Texas, and from there to Lamar county, Texas and was engaged in the mercantile business at Chicota, Texas.
Following this he came to the Indian Territory and engaged in farming and mercantile business until statehood when he was elected the first registrar of deeds for Choctaw county, which office he held for two terms.
Mr. Pennington had been married twice. His wife was Miss Alice Haynes of Lamar County Texas, who died in February 1890 , without issue. On September 11, 1892 he was married to Martha A. White of Chicota, Texas, and to them the following children were born. Harvey J. Pennington, now of Antlers; Mrs. Ernest Shelton, of Rock Hill; Mrs. Willard Moran, Shawnee; Mrs. B.E. Pitts, Boswell, and J.A. Junior of Oklahoma City and Mrs. J.S. Griffith, of Roswell, New Mexico. A son, James Edmond died here several years ago.
Mr. Pennington was truly a pioneer citizen of this community. During all of his long residence and in all of his dealings of a private citizen and public official he was reckoned as one of the honorable, upright and staunch citizens of the community.
He was a lifelong member of the Baptist church and several fraternal organizations.
Burial will follow the funeral services in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
