Pioneer Merchant Dies Late Friday
Heart Stroke Fatal For T.C. Abernathy

    Thomas C. Abernathy, 74 years old, died at his home, 904 East Rosewood, late Friday afternoon as the result of a heart stroke. He had been ill for a week but his condition was not regarded as critical.
    Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the home by Rev. Reroy Elkins. Burial was in the Fort Towson cemetery under the direction of the Snow funeral home.
    A native of Arkansas, Abernathy came to Fort Towson in 1900. He was a merchant at Fort Towson for several years before moving to Hugo. At one time he operated a shingle mill at Swink.
    Until advanced age and failing health forced his retirement he operated a neighborhood grocery store near his home in third ward.
    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eula Abernathy; three daughters, Mrs. W.A. White, and Mrs. Polly Wynn, both of Hugo; and Mrs. Amos Vickery, Ft. Smith, Arkansas; one son, Ollie Abernathy, Ada; and one sister, Mrs. Charles Voss of Long Beach, California.
    Pall bearers were: Chick Dunn, W.B. Kelly, R.S. Vickery, A.B. Tyus, A.M. Merrill, J.D. Lawhorn


Opal Abney

    Graveside services were Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Goodland Cemetery for Opal Abney of Hugo.
    Mrs. Abney died Jan. 4 in Memorial Hospital at the age of 62.
    She was born Nov. 13, 1918 in Reese, Texas and had been a resident of Oklahoma since 1963.
    Surviving relatives include: her husband, Ephus Abney of the home; 11 children and step children including: Betty Jean Bateman of Sawyer, Bessie Lee Hill, Francis Louise Mandress and Sheila May Gamblin all of Hugo, Kathy Ann Abney of Lubbock, Texas, Bennie Wayne Cooper of Germany, James H. Cooper of Atoka, Donna Fay Webber of McKinney, Texas, Frances Elrita Angle of Rockwall, Texas and Robert Allen and Kenneth Charles Tarrant; two brothers, Rufus Tarrant of Frost, Texas and Richard Tarrant of San Francisco, Ca.; two sisters, Ester Fleeman of Italy, Texas and Francis Birchfield of Mission, Texas; she is also survived by 11 grandchildren.
    Arrangements were under the direction of Coffey Funeral Home. Rev. David Bush officiated.


Mrs. E.A. Aubrey

Mrs. E.A. Aubrey Dies at Soper Home

    Mrs. E.A. Aubrey, 77 years old, died at her home in Soper Wednesday night following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were set for 3 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church of Soper, Woodruff-Jones Funeral directors of Antlers in charge.
    A complete list of survivors was not available, but it was learned through long distance telephone conversation with the funeral home that in addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Nell Alsobrook of Soper.


Patricia Ann Brantley

Small Girl Dies Early This Morning

    Patricia Ann Brantley, three-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Sheets, who reside southeast of Hugo, died early this morning at the home.
    Funeral services will be in the Church of Christ at 4 p.m. Thursday, with burial in Mount Olivet. Snow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


J.E. Deupree

Pioneer Forney Cattleman Dies
J.E. Deupree Was Friend of Needy
The Hugo Daily News May 19, 1939 - transcribed by Ron Henson

    J.E. Deupree, 65 year old Forney rancher and Cattleman, passed away at the Hugo Hospital at 6 p.m. Thursday following an illness of several years. He had been critically ill for more than a week.
    Funeral services will be held at Forney at 2 p.m. Saturday, Woodruff-Jones funeral directors of Antlers in charge.
    Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Roy and Clyde, both of Forney, three sisters and a number of grandchildren.
    Deupree has been a successful cattleman for many years. In his desire to be of service to his neighbors and friends, he has given away a small fortune in groceries, cash and other necessities.


William Herman Elliott

    Services will be Thursday at 3 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Soper for William Herman Elliott of Soper.
    Mr. Elliott died Jan. 5 in the VA Hospital in Bonham, Texas at the age of 70.
    He was born Sept. 14, 1910 in Hot Springs, Ark., and had been a resident of Choctaw County since 1920. He was a member of the DAV and the American Legion, having been a World War II veteran.
    Mr. Elliott was a laborer and a Baptist.
    Surviving relatives include: two brothers, Dick Elliott and James "Jim" Elliott, both of Soper; two sisters, Janie Vernon of Pine, Ca., and Elvia Basham, of Soper.
    Arrangements are under the direction of Coffey Funeral Home. Rev. Evert Short will officiate and burial will be in Soper Cemetery.


W.M. 'Doc' Hightower

W.M. 'Doc' Hightower Dies Late Tuesday
Heart Disease is Cause of Death

    W.M. "Doc" Hightower, of Fort Towson, one of the county's most colorful figures for the past quarter of a century, died in the Hugo Hospital a few hours after being brought here late Tuesday. Cause of death was said to be heart disease.
    Mr. Hightower was known far and wide as the manufacturer of Herbotone herb medicine. Until his advanced age prevented his making long trips, he used to tour the country with a medicine show troup, selling his Herbotone remedy.
    He is survived by a son, jerry Hightower of Tulsa and three daughters, whose names could not be learned today. Two of them reside in California and the other in Houston, Texas.
    Funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of his son from Tulsa this afternoon. Coffey-Baker funeral directors are in charge.

Aged Boswell Man Dies Early Today
J.G. Parker Rites To Be Friday

    J.G. Parker, 81 year old resident of Boswell, passed away at his home this morning at 3:30 o'clock. he had been in poor health for several years. Before his advanced age removed him from active work, he was a stock farmer.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the First Methodist church of Boswell. Interment will be in Boswell cemetery under direction of the Snow Funeral home.
    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maud Parker; a daughter, Mrs. S. hooker of Shreveport, La.; a son, T.W. Parker of Boswell; and a sister, Mrs. R.J. Harrald of Honey Grove, Texas.
