Wyatt B. McDowell

Graveside services for Wyatt B. McDowell, 85, of Jacksonville, Texas, formerly of Longview, Texas, and Kaufman, Texas, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2005 at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hugo.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home, Jacksonville, Texas.

Mr. McDowell died Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at a Rusk, Texas, nursing home.

He was born November 18, 1919 in Hugo, Oklahoma. He was a retired high school administrator and was a career educator for 37 years. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a Master Sgt. He graduated from Oklahoma City University in 1938. He was an all-collegiate football player. He received his masters Degree from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. He went on to be a distinguished football coach, principal and counselor. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Jacksonville, Texas.

Survivors: Wife, Florence McDowell of Jacksonville, Texas; sons, Jim McDowell and wife, Doris of Jacksonville, Texas, Bill McDowell and wife, Machelle of Jacksonville, Texas; sister, Melbalene Giard and husband, Tressleen of Harlingen, Texas; three grandchildren, Jamie McDowell, M.D., and wife, Jennifer of Nashville, Tenn., Amanda McDowell of Jacksonville, Texas, and Joshua McDowell of Jacksonville, Texas.
