Pauline Dollison Roebuck
contributed by The Hugo Daily News

Pauline Dollison Roebuck passed away quietly December 20, 2004 in Hinton, Oklahoma after a long illness. Her remains will be buried in Soper Cemetery.

Pauline was born in May 1931 to William Dollison and Effie Jane Lee in Comanche County, Texas. She was the granddaughter of Robert Lee and Cebelle “Belle" Straley Lee; and James Geo Frank Dollison and Olive Foreman. Pauline met Elvis Roebuck of Soper right after his returning home from WWII. They married in Hugo in 1947 and divorced in late March of 1964. To this union were born four children, Loretta , Anthony and Marvin Roebuck of Oklahoma and Mary Roebuck of Anchorage, Alaska. Pauline was known as “Sis" to her family.

She attended Beauty College in Capitol Hill, Oklahoma City. She worked out of a friend's garage on S.E. 51st Street until the fall of 1959 when the family moved back to Soper. Soon after, she began working at the shop of Ms. Fuqua in Hugo, until Ms. Fuqua retired. Pauline bought the business and operated it under the name of Pauline's Personality Beauty Shop for three years at 112 East Jackson Street, located in the old Palace Hotel Building in Hugo. She loved music. She learned to play the guitar, sing and square dance. She attended many dances at The Frisco Depot, as well as the many Homecoming dances that were held in Hugo, Boswell and Bennington. She also loved to collect folk art like quilts, quilt tops and crocheted pieces. She had block parties at Christmas to make sure that every child on the block had a Christmas gift. She met Bernice Burkett from Anchorage, Alaska in 1961 at her beauty shop. They became very good friends. In February of 1964 the two of them drove from Hugo to Anchorage, arriving one month before the 1964 Alaskan Earthquake. She fell in love with Alaska and enjoyed all that the wilderness had to offer, she learned to fish, camp, hunt and garden she also took flying lessons. She worked for awhile as a beautician in the Anchorage area; later she and another friend named Freddy worked on a fishing boat and at a fishing cannery - She didn't like this work very much. Later she joined the Teamsters union and worked in the Sunrise Bakery. As a Teamster, the opportunity for a job in 1975 on the Trans Alaska Pipeline was offered and she took it. She worked for two years as a Teamster Warehouseman in Pipeline Camps above the Brooks Range. In 1976, she bought 20 acres and a home in Zillah, Washington. The area is known for its' vineyards and fruit orchards. Pauline loved to take her family, friends and visitors on tours of the local vineyards and antique stores. When she retired from the Teamsters, she took up gardening full time. She raised horses and calves as well as alfalfa hay for sale. She had the most beautiful rose gardens in all of Zillah and the best night crawlers for fishing grew in her gardens. Polly and Elvis were blessed with 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

Pauline didn't know any strangers, she always had an open door, a smile and a cup of tea for any visitor. She was a good woman, a good mother and a good friend who will be missed very much by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial will be held July 10, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the Senior Citizens Center in Soper. Turner Funeral Home, Hinton.

Paid announcement.
