June Eddleman
contributed by The Hugo Daily News
The world lost a really neat lady recently. On May 7, 2005, June Eddleman, devoted wife and mother passed away after a lengthy illness. Her sense of humor and truly indomitable spirit will be missed by those who knew her and loved her. June was born on June 10, 1920, in Denton, Texas, to the late "Barney" and "Miss Chic" Barnhill. The family moved to a farm in southern Choctaw County when she was six. A natural horsewoman, June participated in regional rodeos in the 1930Õs. Also a natural athlete in any sport she chose to pursue, she was a formidable basketball player, taking Soper High School to several wins during her high school career. After a year at the Texas State College for Women (later known as Texas Women's University) in Denton, Texas, a handsome young man persuaded her that the best deal going was to help him run a farm in the Red River bottom, south of Hugo, Oklahoma. Lex and June were married on June 18, 1942 and started a life together that would span almost 63 years. During those years, she and Lex were partners in everything, from the farming and ranching to the later trucking business. After leaving the river bottom for "town" (Hugo) in 1979, Lex and June took to the road in their "5th wheel" travel trailer, traveling throughout the country and generally enjoyed a well-earned retirement. An avid fisherman, Lex made sure that "his girl" fished nearly all over the country (and Alaska), in addition to being a regular fixture at Hugo Lake. In the mid to late 1980Õs Lex introduced her to golf. The fairways of Hugo were witness to some awesome drives and putting. This practice would continue after their move to Oklahoma City in 1995. They moved to Oklahoma City to be near Deb and have resided at Hearthstone Assisted Living for the past three years with countless loving caregivers and friends. A member of the Hugo United Methodist Church and also loved and supported by Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. June is survived by her husband, Lex, daughter Deb, son-in-law Gary, and grand daughter, Alexa Atchley of Edmond, Oklahoma and Rickee and Butch Piece of Gabbs, Nevada. Brother-in-law Jack Eddleman; sister-in-law Oraneva Merkle and Ottie Parker of Hugo; numerous nieces and nephews as well as countless friends. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation 825 NE 13th, Oklahoma City OK 73104 or The American Diabetes Association (Oklahoma Chapter) 3000 United Founders Blvd. Ste 108, Oklahoma City, OK 73112
