Martha Jane Dallas Johnson
The Choctaw Intelligencer December July 25, 1850
transcribed by Ron Henson
Died in this vicinity July 19th, Martha Jane Dallas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, aged five years 11 months and 2 days, after an illness of some two weeks. During which time she bore her sufferings with the fortitude and cheerfulness of a grown person. Martha was a gentle and obedient child, and as her parents stood and gazed upon her angelic beauty, they thought it strange that death should blight so sweet a flour [sic]. But alas, it withered and died to bloom again in the world of endless light and bliss. The day before her death, she was seen frequently to smile; ah, doubtless her eyes were feasting on the sight of angels as they plumed their wings, truly to waft her spirit home.
"Think then, ye mourning parent, nor Complain
For a breathless child, as ye weep in vain.
Perhaps Almighty God foresaw some where,
Some tempting evil that should her beguile
Remember that of her you are not bereaved
But from the coming evil she is saved." M.
