Elizabeth E. Nail
The Choctaw Intelligencer April 23, 1851
transcribed by Ron Henson
Departed this life, at the residence of her father, Mr. Joseph W. Nail, March 20, Elizabeth E. Nail, in the eleventh year of her age.
Rarely has the grave closed over a more promising child. She possessed a mind of unusual strength and maturity. During the years that she was a member of Wheelock School, she was distinguished for accuracy, perseverance and neatness. She secured, in an uncommon degree, the confidence and affection of her teachers and school-mates, and her early death is sincerely mourned by them and by her bereaved relatives.
She had appeared for some years very thoughtful and serious. Her feelings were tender on the subject of religion, and during her sickness, which was very distressing, she was patient and very affectionate to those who waited on her, although her sufferings were severe, and her head much affected; but her last hours were peaceful. Her place is vacant at her father's fireside, and in the school-room, but He who gave has a right to take away again. Death comes we know not how or when!
"O, what is life! 'Tis like a flower,
That blossoms and is gone
It flourishes its little hour
With all its beauty on.
Death comes, and like a wintry day
It cuts the lovely flower away." D.
