The Hugo Husonian February 1, 1917
Transcribed by: JoLynn Self
Mrs. John Gray Shoots Self and Dies
Mrs. John Gray, 607 West Jackson Street, accidentally shot herself Sunday morning about 11:15 through the heart with a 32 guage(sp) Winchester rifle and died at 2:30 that afternoon.
Mrs. Gray was alone at the time and said that she was cleaning house. She said in her statement that she started to move the gun from one position to another and it exploded. The bullet entered her heart and was removed later by Dr. Askew from the back. It was some time before she was found and it was by her son, Cleveland then. The young man had returned from Sunday school and discovered his mother. He called for help and a doctor. Mrs. Gray could give no very clear statement as to how the occurrence happened. She was thirty nine years old and is survived by her husband, three sons and one sister. The funeral will be this afternoon and burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
