DIED: JANUARY 4, 2001
Frank Eugene McFarland, 83, Stillwater, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2001 at his home. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Matt Miles and Ken Cox will officiate. Interment will be at Forest Park Cemetery in Shreveport, La. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home.
McFarland was born Sept. 8, 1918 in Fort Towson to Thomas E. and Sadie Margaret Gayer McFarland.
He was educated in Shreveport public schools. He served in the 102nd Infantry Division in World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge in 1944.
He married Trudy McFarland on Dec. 20, 1947 in Columbia, La. She died on Sept. 19, 1980.
He attended Baylor University and received his bachelor's degree in social studies in 1950. He accepted a counseling position at Texas A&M and was able to complete his master's and doctorate degrees in student personnel administration from Columbia University. At Texas A&M, he held the positions of director of testing and research and associate professor of psychology before coming to Oklahoma State University in 1959. At OSU, McFarland served as director of student personnel in the College of Arts and Sciences; dean of Student Affairs and director of Student Services in the College of Education. He created the university's department of financial aids and Office of International Student Advisement. He became one of the first psychologists licensed for private practice in Oklahoma in 1966. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
McFarland is survived by his two daughters, Marsha Lane McFarland, Ada, and Martha Lynne Cox, New Boston, Texas; five grandchildren, Amanda, Brooks, Rachel, Clara and Casey, all of New Boston; two brothers, Thomas Rupert McFarland, Kingwood, Texas, Dr. Harry G. McFarland, Shreveport; and one sister, Olaine Williamson, Shreveport.
