ROBERTS, OUIDA FERN (HENDERSON)
Transcribed by Bessie Meredith
BORN: MAY 27, 1921
DIED: JULY 4, 2005
Ouida Fern Roberts, a lifetime resident of Fort Towson, passed away on July 4, 2005, at the Paris Regional Medical Center. She was 84 years of age.
A member of the First Baptist Church for 72 years, Ouida was actively involved in compilation of a church history book to use for the church’s 100th birthday celebration. She often referred lovingly to the Youth Sunday School Class that she took over from her mother, Mrs. Annie Henderson, in the 1940s which brought her great pleasure and fond memories. In her younger years, she enjoyed working in Vacation Bible School as well. She loved her church. Ouida was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and also actively involved in community service in Fort Towson. She was the town clerk during the “all-woman” City Council Era in the 1950s, named Fort Towson Woman of the Year in 1984 and was primarily responsible for the first Senior Citizen’s Activity Center in the old rock City Hall. The annual Homecoming was special to Ouida, as was the Fort Towson Museum, both of which she spent much time and energy promoting.
Under Ouida’s supervision, Hopson Park evolved from a litter filled, west end drainage ditch to a place of beauty in the heart of the Fort Towson Community, where she will be sorely missed. For several years, if a stranger came to town seeking historical information about the area, they were directed to Ouida who was extremely knowledgeable, not only about the area, but also the people round about. Fort Towson mourns a much loved friend and staunch supporter today.
Ouida was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett (3/11/1963) and Annie Henderson (6/21/1975); brothers, Emmett Earl (7/17/1999) and Jack Henderson (6/8/1938); and her husband, Robert Lee Roberts (2/11/1997).
She is survived by one daughter, Peggy Tillman and husband Kenneth of Fort Towson; two grandchildren, Chuck Tillman and wife Darla Darity Tillman of Swink, Lee Ann Lamza and husband Glenn Lamza of Fort Towson; and two great-grandchildren, Chas Tillman and Matthew Lamza.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2005, at the Fort Towson First Baptist Church with Reverend Kurtis Huffman officiating, assisted by Reverend Oscar Wilkie. Interment will follow in the Fort Towson Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.
Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home – Hugo.
