SHIPP, FREDA (THORNELY)
Contributed by Bessie Meredith
BORN: JULY 4, 1924
DIED: AUGUST 31, 2001
Freda Thornely Shipp, 77, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home with the Rev. Sallye Garrett Tomberlin officiating.
Mrs. Shipp was born July 4, 1924, in Choctaw County, Okla., the seventh of eight children. She was an educator in Amarillo for many years. She got her degree in education from West Texas State University in 1958.
She taught first grade for 26 years and helped an entire generation of Amarillo children learn to read. This was her most enduring legacy that she was justifiably proud of, but never saw as anything more than doing what she loved.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Shipp.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Shipp Glasgow; a son-in-law, Gary White; two sisters, Reba Wiggins and Helen Jensen and husband, Bob; a brother, Cleo Thornley and wife, Mary; two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Cheyenne Glasgow; a great-grandchild, Sayer; a great niece, Ardra McDonald Hughes; a soul brother, Ray Alfred Thornley; and special friends, J.E. Garret, Sallye Tomberlin, Larry and Patty Vickers, Louis Sawyer, Hattie and Ralph Carter and Elaine Wiggins.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Tammy, Linda, Elner and Patricia.
