J.B. Holcomb

J.B. Holcomb Killed Saturday Night
The Boswell News – March 17, 1932
Transcribed by Ron Henson for OKCHOCTA

J.B. Holcomb, aged 24 years, was shot and killed Saturday night by a man named Fields seven or eight miles Southwest of Boswell.

According to the reports, a dance was being held Saturday evening at the home of G.R. “Feak” McCain, about six or seven miles southeast of Boswell, at which time, Fields and the Holcomb boys along with several of the other men became slightly intoxicated and during the course of the quarrel, Fields and Holcomb began fighting.

Fields is then alleged to have asked one of the by-standers to lend him a gun. This was refused.

Fields is then said to have gone over to a neighbor’s home and told the story that he and Holcomb had captured a skunk in a hen house and that they wished to borrow a gun to slay it with. This was loaned.

Fields returned to the home and finding Holcomb in the yard began the quarrel again and a short time later shot him. The charge struck him in the leg just above the knee.

Fields is then said to have stood by and not allowed anyone to give assistance to the wounded man although the wife of Holcomb made three attempts to drag her husband to the house.

Finally Fields went into the house still holding the gun. A woman endeavored to secure the gun from him, but he is said to have told her to stand back that he “Might have to use this gun again tonight.”

Shortly before the wounded man died, Fields left with the gun still in his possession and has not been found to date.

Mr. Holcomb was married to Miss Bernice Smith about a year ago. She together with his parents survive him. He is also survived by one brother and three sisters.

Interment was in the Boswell Cemetery Monday funeral services being conducted by Rev. J.B. Ward.
