Shortly after their marriage they moved to Fayetteville, Ark., where Austin worked with his brother Raymond at the Fayetteville Flight School. There he obtained his flight instructor's rating and taught ROTC students through the University of Arkansas. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 as a pilot where he flew B-26 bombers.
