Dr. Fred Switzer

    Dr. Fred D. Switzer, a resident of McAlester, died Saturday in his home city. He was 77.
    An ophthalmologist by occupation, he was a member and elder at the First Christian Church in McAlester and had served as a longtime member and past president of the Rotary Club.
    He entered the Army Medical Corp in 1940 and was assigned to Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
    Dr. Switzer was born Sept. 19, 1908 in Fort Towson, the son of Charlie and Mattie Switzer. He had been a resident of Hugo for many years.
    He graduated from Oklahoma Medical School in 1936. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons.
    Dr. Switzer married Dorothy DeWeese on May 26, 1937 in St. Souis, Mo. She preceded him in death on Oct. 20, 1983.
    He moved to McAlester in 1953 and joined the staff of the McAlester clinic. After retiring from the clinic, he opened his own practice in McAlester. He also established and operated the Switzer Registered Hereford Ranch for more than 40 years.
    Dr. Switzer was the recipient of a number of awards and honors for services during World War II and for serving on state medical committees. He was also active in FFA work.
    Survivors include a son, Bob Switzer of Houston; a daughter, Suzanne Switzer Bennett of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren; and two nieces.
    Services are set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Mill Funeral Home Chapel of McAlester. James R. Priddy will officiate.
    Graveside services and burial will be held in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hugo.
    Mills Funeral Home of McAlester is in charge of arrangements.
