L.J. Langston
Fort Towson Enterprise – November 19, 1915 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Called to Great Beyond
On Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 the death angel came to Fort Towson and called the spirit of one of our greatest men. Not great as some may consider greatness, but from God’s point of view one of the greatest. His was a successful life; that of Rev. L.J. Langston. He died praising God and triumphing in a living faith.
Bro. Langston was born in Lincoln county Tennessee, April 14, 1855, and at the time of his death was 60 years, 6 months and 27 days old. He was converted at the age of twenty five, and joined the Missionary Baptist church and felt the call to preach, and for thirty five years has been a preacher of the gospel and in addition working at his trade, that of shoe and harness maker and repairer. He had been in very poor health for several years, suffering from stomach trouble.
There are many noble things that could be said of him, one of which the writer wishes to mention, is, that a few days before he passed away, he said; You can tell the people of Fort Towson that I owe no man a ten cents and no man owes me ten cents.
Straightforward and honest, upright and truthful he lived, and died with the confidence he was going to a better land. Who dares not to call his life a success.
He leaves a wife, one brother, two sisters, ten children, 5 boys and 5 girls, and 15 grandchildren to mourn his death. May the blessings of God ever abide with them.
Who’ll be the next?
