Pioneer Citizen Dies
Mrs. Carrie Self, a pioneer citizen of this section of the state, having lived in what is now Choctaw county for thirty years or more, died at the home of her son, Tom Self, seven miles west of Hugo, just before noon Saturday. Pneumonia and old age is given as the cause of her demise. She was 74 years of age.
Deceased was the mother of Doss and Tom Self, both prominent citizens of Choctaw county.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the side of the grave in the Billy Spring private cemetery just south of Hugo. No services were held at the residence. The funeral procession drove from the home of Tom Self to the cemetery at 2:30 in the afternoon. The services were pronounced by the Rev. A.S. Wells, of the First Baptist church, of Hugo.
Carrie Baxter was born in Chattanooga, Georgia, Sept. 4, 1842. She moved from Georgia to Missouri in 1858. From Missouri she moved to Doakesville, Indian Territory, in 1863. From Doakesville she moved to Honey Grove, Texas, where she was until 1885 when she returned to the territory. She was married to W.C. Self in 1867. To this union were born ten children, two daughters and eight sons. One daughter and four sons have died.
E.G. Baxter, a brother, and Mrs. R.C. Freeny, a sister, both of Caddo, Okla., were present at the funeral. A large number of friends attended the burial.
