E.A. Carter Passes Away
Fort Towson Enterprise – May 3, 1912 – transcribed by Ron Henson

Eleazer Ashney Carter was born in Ouachita county, Arkansas in 1874; died in Fort Towson, April 26, 1912. He removed from Nevada county, Arkansas, to Fort Towson in 1903, where he began his business career as a general merchant. He rapidly rose in respect and influence in his community, and had the honor of serving his town in the capacity of mayor three terms. He was prominent in Masonic circles, of which fraternity he had been a member several years.
During the summer and fall of 1911 his health began to deteriorate and after a lingering illness, evidences of consumption appeared. His friends persuaded him to go to San Angelo, Texas, where, it was hoped, he would greatly restore his health; but he returned, unimproved, in a short time to Fort Towson where he lived placidly the meager days left to him.
A host of his friends accompanied his body to the old Doaksville cemetery, where he was buried with Masonic honors on the 26th of April, 1912. He is survived by his wife and two children, and to them we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
