A death which cast gloom over the city of Hugo happened Tuesday evening about 5:30 o’clock, when it was reported that Mrs. M.P. McDonald had been drowned in Roebuck Lake.
Mrs. McDonald was very enthusiastic about swimming and had been going to Roebuck almost every day all summer and had become quite a good swimmer. Very seldom, however, her friends state, had she ventured very far from shore, but Tuesday swam out a little farther than usual and let down, being in water over her head. She went under and came up calling for help. She was out by herself, but several persons who were seated on the shore watching her, made attempts to reach her, but failed, and she sank out of sight and lost her life. Efforts were began immediately to rescue the body, which was recover [sic] and hour later.
Mr. McDonald, who is editor of the Daily Husonina, did not go down with the party, but intended going down later. He was notified by phone of the sad occurrence, and left immediately for the lake.
The party arrived in Hugo about 7 o’clock with the body, which was carried to the home of her sister, Mrs. E.M. Durland. Funeral services were held yesterday (Thursday) afternoon at 3 o’clock.
