Judge Clarence Herndon Howe
1928

Veteran Hugo Attorney Dies Early Sunday
Dean of Bar Association Was Democratic Leader and Was Active In Politics

Judge Clarence Herndon Howe, dean of the Choctaw County Bar association, died at his home in Hugo at 12:15 o'clock Sunday morning.
Judge Howe had been confined to his bed for two months and his health had been failing for a number of years. The funeral service was conducted at the family home, "Spicewood," Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Burial was in Mount Olivet cemetery there.
Judge Howe was born in Rome, Ga., June 3, 1860, and moved to Sebastian county, Arkansas, while still a small boy. In that county he occupied the office of deputy tax assessor, deputy county clerk and county clerk during the time he was studying law. He was admitted to the bar in Arkansas in 1897.
Attorney for Railroad
He was married in 1884 to Miss Lula Scott McEachin of Midland, a member of an Arkansas family, who survives him.
Judge Howe moved to Hugo in 1903 as attorney for the Frisco railroad which was then building the east and west line connections out of that city.
He was a democrat of the old school and took a very active part in political and civic affairs in Hugo. Probably his most outstanding achievement was the part he took in leading the fight for statehood for the Indian Territory in 1907 and the winning of the county seat designation for Hugo. He was a member of the Baptist church.
Besides his wife, Judge Howe is survived by two daughters, Mrs. R.H. Stanley and Mrs. William Hayes, both of Hugo, and his son, Robert Scott Howe, junior member of the law firm of Howe and Howe.
