Hugo Youth Is Killed In Car Wreck Monday
Oklahoma Cars Collide on Paris Highway; Many Injured
One person, Woodrow Rhodes, 19, of Hugo, was killed and ten others were injured when two cars crashed head-on at the narrow bridge just north of Hinckley on the highway to Paris late Monday afternoon.
Most seriously injured was Jimmie Rhodes, 12, Woodrow's brother, whose skull was crushed. The boy's mother, Mrs. Nannie Rhodes, was knocked unconscious and suffered from shock. Mr. and Mrs. Tambo Rhodes and daughter, Caroline, were injured less seriously.
The Rhodes' car, a Chevrolet, attempted to pass a truck parked by the bridge, reports said, and met a Dodge with Mr. and Mrs. Grover C. Battles and three children, of Walco. Mr. Battles was believed to be the most seriously injured of his family.
Woodrow Rhodes was a first class private in the National Guard at Hugo and returned from the encampment at Fort Sill only last Saturday. His brother, Tambo, also is a first class private and is first cook in the Guard here, Commander Fit Carson said.
Funeral services for Woodrow were held Wednesday afternoon from the Clayton Avenue Baptist church, the Rev. L.B. Ward, officiating. He was accorded military rites at Springs Chapel cemetery. [unreadable] Funeral home was in charge of burial.
