Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Ada Grace
The Hugo Daily News August 23, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Grace, 46 years old, were held in the Baptist church at Fort Towson Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock.
Mrs. Grace died in her home 8 miles south of Ft. Towson at 4 a.m. Sunday. Services were conducted by Rev. Bill Golden with Coffey-Campbell funeral directors in charge.
Survivors are her husband, R.L. Grace, two daughters and one son.
Funeral Services For W.F. Smith
Veteran Frisco Employe [sic] Is Buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery

Funeral services for W.F. Smith, veteran Frisco brakeman, who died while on duty Wednesday afternoon, were conducted by Rev. E.C. Hicks, Methodist pastor, in the Smith residence at 1202 South "J" street this afternoon at 1:30.
Mr. Smith, well known here in railroad circles, dropped dead as he entered the west bound train to take up his duties at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon. Death was attributed to some form of heart ailment.
The veteran Frisco employe [sic] came to Hugo in 1901 and began his long years of service with the railroad. He was born in a small Missouri town, Nov. 15, 1874. Previous to his coming here he worked in railroad shops in the north.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lela Smith; two daughters, Miss Helen Smith of Antlers; Mrs. T.H. Fisher jr., Hugo; granddaughter, Billy Jo Fisher; and two sisters and three brothers.
It was not known at noon today whether or not any of the brothers or sisters would arrive here in time for the services.
Bearers at the funeral were: H.M. Williams, P.B. Aubrey, D.W. Wright, V.L. Kile, Sam Ferrier, and Ben Grady.
Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Coffey-Campbell funeral directors were in charge.W.F. Smith Dies Of Heart Failure
Veteran Brakeman Is Taken by Death As He Starts on RunW.F. Smith, 62 years old, veteran Frisco brakeman, dropped dead at 3:30 this afternoon, a few moments after he went on duty on the west bound Frisco train that was scheduled to leave for the Ardmore run at 4:10. Death was attributed to heart failure.
The body was taken to the Coffey-Campbell funeral home to await arrangements for services.
Smith was president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Lodge 702 of Hugo, and had been in the service of the Frisco since 1901. He was brakeman on the engine conducted by F.H. Caldwell.
Death came instantaneously as the veteran brakeman climbed the steps to his position in the train. His passing was a complete shock to his family and friends since he had had [sic] no symptoms of ill health.
Survivors are his wife and two daughters, Mrs. T.H. Fisher jr., Hugo, and Miss Helen Smith, Antlers.
Fort Towson Man Is Buried Wednesday

Funeral services were held at Fort Towson Wednesday afternoon for M.D. France who died at his home north of Fort Towson early that morning. He was 52 years old.
Rev. Bill Smith of Fort Towson preached the sermon and Coffey-Campbell were in charge.
Survivors are his wife and four children.
Small Boy Dies Here Wednesday

Funeral services were held in Antlers today for Teddy Gean Sharpe, small son of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Sharp, who died Wednesday afternoon in Hugo.
The time for the services was set for 2 o’clock.
Services Conducted For Mrs. C.T. Tyler

Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 3 o’clock for Mrs. C.T. Tyler, who died at her home one mile north and one mile west of Grant early today.
Burial was in Springs Chapel Cemetery with Snow Funeral home in charge and Rev. W.C. Mathis officiating. The deceased was 50 years of age at the time of her death.
Spencerville Man Passes Away Today

Thomas H. Adair, 89 years old of Spencerville, passed away at his home this morning following a long illness. Funeral services will be conducted at Spencerville Saturday at 11 a.m. with Snow Funeral directors in charge.
Mr. Adair has lived at Spencerville for the past 16 years. Until his retirement he was a farmer. Surviving him are three sons: John and Raymond of Hugo and Bill of Spencerville; and one daughter, Mrs. Rosie Jeffrie, of Kansas City, Mo.
Fort Towson Man Buried At Unger

Funeral services for J.M. Bridges, 65 years old, of Sawyer, were held near Unger at 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Bridges died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl Goin at Unger Saturday morning. He had been ill for some time.
He is survived by his wife and one daughter. Snow Funeral directors were in charge of arrangements.
Services Held For Mrs. C.C. Ketchum

Mrs. Sarah Alice Ketchum died Saturday afternoon at her home west of Hugo. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 Sunday afternoon in the Forrest Home school house, with Rev. E.C. Hicks, officiating.
Mrs. Ketchum was born in Atlanta, Georgia, April 12, 1866. She is survived by her husband, C.C. Ketchum; five daughters, Mrs. D.W. Oakes, Soper; Mrs. C.A. Baker, Roswell, New Mexico; Mrs. Claude Brookey, Slayton, Texas; Mrs. John F. Brown and Mrs. J.E. Willis of Hugo; Three sons: Grady, Claude and James, all of Hugo.
Bearers were Tom Moore, Zeno Springs, Mrs. [unreadable], Lige Hammock, Dale Williams, and Bill Caldwell. Interment was in Goodland cemetery under the direction of Senner Funeral home.

George H. Fitzjohn Retired Farmer, Passes Away

George H. Fitzjohn, 81 years old, retired farmer, died at his home two and one-half miles west of Hugo this morning at 5:30 o’clock.
He had been a resident of this vicinity since 1907 and is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Mary Evans, Marme [?], Mich., and Mrs. Hattie Zimeer [?], New Orleans, La. His wife died in 1908 [?].
Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. today in the Snow funeral chapel and burial followed in the Goodland cemetery. Rev. E.C. Hick of the First Methodist church delivered the message.
Robert H. Sweat Taken By Death
Aged Hugo Resident to Be Buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery

An illness of long duration ended this morning in the death of Robert Hatton Sweat 80 years old, who for many years has been a resident of Hugo. The end came at 11 o’clock at the family residence on East Jefferson street.
The body was taken to Snow Funeral Chapel to await arrangements for funeral services and the arrival of relatives. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, but no time has been set Monday for the services.
Mr. Sweat at one time conducted a draying business in Hugo. He retired from this occupation many years ago and the remaining years of his life have been spent at the home on East Jefferson where he has engaged in truck gardening.
Survivors include his wife, five daughters Mrs. C.B. Harris and Mrs. J.J. Stewart, Paris; Mrs. T.C. Shelton, Hugo; Miss Emma Sweat, St. Louis, Mo.; Miss Willie Sweat, Hugo, and one son, Arthur Sweat, Oklahoma City.
Former Hugo Man Dies In Hospital at Paris

John Kirkpatrick, former Hugo resident, died in a Paris Texas hospital Sunday night. Funeral services will be conducted in Tiger Town, Texas, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
Mrs. Tommie Self and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Self plan to attend the funeral services.
Mrs. Mildred Oakes Buried At Messer
The Hugo Daily News September 14, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Mrs. Mildred M. Oakes, 22 years old, died at her home four miles east of and four miles south of Grant, Monday night of a heart ailment.
Funeral services were conducted at Messer this afternoon at 4 o’clock and burial was in the Messer cemetery. Snow funeral directors in charge.
Survivors are her husband, Walter Oakes, and two daughters, Maude Ruth and Vera Mae.
Funeral Services For W.J. Jones Saturday
The Hugo Daily News October 3, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Funeral services for W.J. Jones, who died in a local hospital Friday following a stroke of paralysis, were conducted in the First Christian Church at 3 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Chas. W. Ferguson and Rev. E.D. Miller in charge.
Burial was in Mount Olivet cemetery with Coffey-Campbell funeral directors in charge.
Bearers were: I.D. hartwell, C.S. Lambeth, D.A. Stovall, W.E. Schooler, H.G. Hixon, and Chas. Nease.
Auto Wreck Near Here Early Today Proves Fatal To Joe H. Sullivan
Aged Boswell Resident Dies En Route to Hospital; Driver of Car Escapes

Joe H. Sullivan, 83 year old Boswell resident, was killed two miles west of Hugo at 8 o’clock this morning when a car in which he was riding overturned. He died before medical aid could be administered.
His son, Warren G. Sullivan, driver of the car was not injured though the car was a total wreck.
The accident occurred on the hill just east of the Holton home. Sullivan attempted to pass a pickup truck on the way down the hill. He pulled too far across the road and one tire went off of the pavement.
In attempting to bring the car back on the pavement, he cut the wheels too short and it crossed the road and went into a ditch.
Witnesses state that the car skidded a great distance in the wet road before it came to a standstill.
Chambless First to Arrive
Jack Chambless was the firs to arrive at the scene. He quickly loaded the injured man in his car and started for the hospital, but Sullivan died enroute [sic].
The aged man lived with his daughter, Mrs. J.R. Knox at Boswell. Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. John R. Knox, Boswell; Mrs. Martha Massey, Durant; Mrs. Francis Bryant, Ft. Towson; sons, Ollie, Dallas; William, McKinney, Texas, Luther and Warren G. both of Boswell; sisters, Mrs. Sallie Ann Howard, Bemis, Tenn.; Mrs. Tennessee Hays, Darden, Tenn.
Funeral services were set for 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Boswell. Senner Funeral directors are in charge of arrangements.
Aged Virgil Resident Is Buried at Sawyer

Funeral services for Alexander Campbell Stanfield, 82 years old, of Virgil, were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Sawyer cemetery.
Rev. Homer Davis, Holiness preacher, officiated at the services with Snow Funeral directors in charge.
The aged man died in a local hospital late Thursday afternoon.
Survivors are his wife, mrs. Alice Stanfield; daughter, Mrs. Eugia [?] Gregory, Sawyer; sons, Jim and Earl, Sawyer, and Lawrence of Fort Towson.
Dave Sharp Dies In Fort Towson Home
The Hugo Daily News August 11, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Funeral services for Dave Sharp were held at Fort Towson Wednesday afternoon, after which burial took place in Doakesville Cemetery.
Mr. Sharp had been a resident of Fort Towson for more than 30 years and was well known in that community. He was stricken ill about a month ago but recovered his usual health but was stricken with paralysis a few days ago.
He was one of the oldest citizens of Fort Towson. His wife has been dead many years but he is survived by several grown children.
Child Dies 2 Months After Drinking Lye

Funeral services for the two year old child of Mr. and Mrs. Omer Johnson of Soper, was to have been held this afternoon at Soper.
The child, a girl, was injured about two months ago when it accidentally drank some lye. She has been treated in Paris and Oklahoma City where she died. Little hope was entertained for recovery from the beginning.
Funeral Services Conducted Today For W.R. Combs
Prominent Citizen Buried In Mount Olivet Monday
The Hugo Daily News August 9, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Funeral services for W.R. Combs were conducted in the First Methodist church at 10 a.m. today by Rev. Ernest Hicks. Death came to the pioneer Hugo resident late Saturday afternoon following an illness of several weeks duration.
Mr. Combs is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Alva Gill, Stamford, Texas, and Mrs. Marguerite Bull, Atlanta, Georgia.
For the past several years, Mr. Combs has operated a neighborhood grocery and school supplies store near the high school on North Second street. Last year he obtained the text book franchicse [sic] and has been the county book dealer since that time.
Mr. Combs was born in Sigorney, Iowa, in 1871. He was 66 years old at the time of his death. He came to Hugo in 1913 and has since made many friends in this part of the state.
He was elected to the city council in the last election, but resigned on the night of his inauguration because of ill health.
Mr. and Mrs. Combs are members of the Methodist church and they have been prominent in church activities.
Bearers at the funeral were: G.H. Blakeney, E.R. DeWeese sr., W.C. Riddle, Otis Corley, E.H. Bailey, and W.E. Bagley.
Interment was in Mounty Olivet cemetery with Senner Funeral home in charge.
Aged Woman Dies in Son’s Home at Gay

Mrs. Margaret E. Whisenhunt, 87 years old, died Thursday in the home of her son, A.C. Whisenhunt at Gay, Oklahoma, where she has lived the past twenty years.
Funeral services were conducted at the Senner funeral home chapel at three o’clock this afternoon with Rev. R.J. Howse officiating. Interment was in Springs Chapel cemetery.
Surviving relatives include one daughter, Mrs. [unreadable] Lyons, [unreadable], New Mexico; three sons, A.C. of Gay, A.N. of Eufaula, Oklahoma, and Ed of Boswell; one brother, A.N. Murray of Hope, Okla.
Bearers at the funeral were: Ed Everidge, Bill Sossamon, John Q. Bills, John Chambers, John Rogers, and Jim Sp[?].

Double funeral services were conducted in the Clayton Avenue Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. J.B. Ward for Morris Shepherd Ragland, 28 years old, who died in the veterans hospital Saurday, and G.M. Holt, 56, who died in the Vinita Hospital Friday.
Mr. Ragland had been seriously ill for seven months prior to his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lorene Ragland; father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Ragland of near McAlester; sister, Mrs. W.L. Phelps, McAlester; brothers, Dave of Apple and John of Hugo.
Interment was in Springs Chapel cemetery with Snow funeral home in charge.
Mr. Holt was buried in Mount Olivet following the ceremony. Survivors are three sons, Bill, Jim and Miller, all of Hugo, and four daughters, Dixie Hold, and Ollie Holt, Cooper, Texas; Mrs. Guy McLarity and Bonnie Holt, Hugo. Coffey-Campbell funeral directors were in charge.
G.M. Holt Dies In Vinita Hospital

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon for G.M. Holt, 56, who died in the Vinita Hospital Friday afternoon. The services will be conducted by Rev. J.B. Ward in the Clayton Avenue Baptist church at 2:30.
Mr. Holt is survived by three sons, Bill, Jim and Miller, all of Hugo, and four daughters, Miss Dixie Holt and Miss Ollie Holt, Cooper, Texas; Mrs. Guy McLarity and Miss Bonnie Holt, Hugo.

C.H. Barnes Buried Sunday at Boswell

C.H. Barnes, age 47, died at his home near Boswell, at 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Boswell cemetery by Rev. W.W. Moreland.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Alpha Barnes and nine children; Millard, Leonard, Alta, Leona, Imogene, Juanita, Curis, Myrtle, and Coleen.

97 Year Old Man Buried At Grant

W.A. Smith, 97 years old, was buried in arGin [sic] this afternoon following funeral services at the cemetery under the direction of Rev. Mark Collum.
The aged county resident was born in 1839, almost a hundred years ago. He is survived by three children, Mrs. Cora Sumner, John E. Smith and Fred Smith, all of the Grant community.
Snow funeral home had charge of arrangements.
Infant Daughter of Woodrow Davis

Fay, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Davis of Swink, was buried at 5 o’clock Monday afternoon in the Swink cemetery following funeral services at the grave.
Survivors are her mother and father. Coffey-Campbell were in charge.

Funeral services were held this morning at 10 o’clock for Mrs. Eliza Billy, 57 years old, who died at her home in Corine, Oklahoma Monday.
Services were conducted at the home and interment was in the family cemetery at Corine. Coffey-Campbell funeral directors conducted the services.
