Aged Teacher Passes Away
Funeral Held Thursday for Mrs. Olivia McCollum [sic]Funeral services were held Thursday morning at Goodland for Mrs. Olivia McCullum, 71 years old, who died Tuesday afternoon at the home of her sister, Mrs. J.P. Gibbons, at Goodland.
Mrs. McCullum was a veteran teacher. She was born in Robinson county, North Carolina, May 21, 1856. She moved to Texas in 1883 and for many years was a teacher in schools of that state. She came to Oklahoma in 1902 and for five years was an active member of the teaching staff of the Goodland Indian orphanage. She then taught in public schools until 1918. Following the death of the Rev. J.P. Givvons in that year she retired from active teaching to assist her sister.
Only two members of a family of eight survive Mrs. McCullum. They are: Mrs. Gibbons and Mrs. D.R. Grantham.
Mrs. McCullum had been a member of the Presbyterian church since childhood and had for many years been active in the work of the organization.
The funeral was conducted in the Goodland Presbyterian church by the Rev. R.M. Firebaugh, pastor.
