Sam & Cub Stanley
The Fort Towson Enterprise January 20, 1911
transcribed by Ron Henson
Two Negroes Use Guns
Last Saturday evening two negroes, Sam and Cub Stanley, brothers, who live on Red river in Choctaw county, came to town where Sam purchased from R.L. Carter two lots of cartridges for 38 and 44 caliber Colt pistols. Late in the afternoon they started home, where they arrived about dark.
After reaching home a difficulty arose over a land lease which one of them held from another brother for 20 acres of land, which the other one claimed had been secured for the purpose of defrauding some minor children of a support. After quite a lot of wrangling Sam and Cub drew their guns and began shooting. Each fired six shots, five from each gun taking effect. Cub's last shot penetrated Sam's heart, killing him instantly, while Cub was shot through stomach, legs, loins, arm and one bullet entered his breast just above his heart and, strange to say, he lived until Monday night.
