Edith Womack Lawless

Edith Womack Lawless of Rattan was born November 17, 1916, at Sobol, Oklahoma, the seventh child of Charles Carroll and Emma Jane Morphew Lawless. She left us for her heavenly home on December 13, 2005 in Antlers.
Mrs. Womack attended school through the eighth grade at Sobol, transferring to Antlers for her freshman and sophomore years, and completed her high school education at Rattan in 1934. Mrs. Womack then attended Southeastern State University until her marriage to Vance Womack on May 16, 1936.Following her marriage she taught school at Oak Grove for one year and at Rattan for two years. Mrs. Womack was employed by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services from 1957 until her retirement in October 1978. She was a faithful member of the Rattan First Baptist Church for over 70 years, where in her later years she was affectionately known as “Miss Edith.” Mrs. Womack was also a member of the Rattan Senior Citizens group and the Antlers Garden Club, where she held several offices. Miss Edith enjoyed painting, sewing, drinking coffee with Vance and dear friends, but most of all, she enjoyed her grandchildren.
Surviving to honor her memory are a son, William Charles Womack, and wife, Karen, of Meridian, Idaho; a daughter, Elaine Smith, and husband Rob of Antlers; six grandchildren, Bethany Womack of Oklahoma City, Kimberly Seid and husband Larry of Pasco, Wash., Brian Kelly of Vinita, Jane Kelly Sullenger and husband James of St. Joseph, Mo., Seth Smith of Stillwater, Shea Keller and husband Geoff of Dallas; four great-grandchildren, Amanda Womack, Taylor, Cody and Sydney Seid; and a brother, Norman Lawless and wife Coletta of Spencerville. Mrs. Womack was preceded in death by parents, Charlie and Emma Jane Lawless; her husband, Vance; brothers Jason, Oscar, Grady, Clifford; and sisters Esther, Edna, Ethel; and one grandson, Benton Womack.
Services were held Saturday, December 17 at the First Baptist Church in Rattan with Rev. Sam Pace, Rev. Doyle Lawless, Rev. J.W. Ray, Seth Smith and Shea Smith Keller officiating. Bruce Frazier and the First Baptist choir were in charge of the music. Burial followed at the Rattan Cemetery with the Mills Coffey Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Rattan First Baptist Church or to Alzheimer’s research.
