Funeral services for J.W. Payne, 89, of Hugo, are pending with Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home. Mr. Payne died Monday, January 16, 2006, in Hugo.

J.W. Payne, Jr., a resident of Hugo, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2006 in Hugo at the age of 89. He was born on January 3, 1917 in Hugo to John William and Effie (Lester) Payne. He married Zelma Lee Hopper in Hugo on February 18, 1939. He was a dairy farmer, painter and auto mechanic. J.W. had lived in this area most of his life. He will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Carroll Payne; a grandson, Raphael Payne; five brothers, Ernest, Euell, Alvis, Odell and Leroy Payne; three sisters, Naomi Bailey, Vista Angel and Ruby Tunnell.

He is survived by his wife, Zelma Lee Payne of the home; four sons, Troy Payne of Van Alstyne, Texas, J.W. Payne III, Bobby Payne and Ronnie Payne all of Hugo; four daughters, Shirley Smith of Powderly, Texas, Cynthia Larson of Bastrop, Texas, Susie Yazel of Pittsburg, Okla., and Pat Coleman of Antlers; two sisters, Marie Pence and Jackie Montgomery, both of Hugo; 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Payne were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 19, 2006 at Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hugo.

The family received friends on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at the funeral home.
