Joe D. Stone

Joe D. Stone, a Pearl Harbor survivor, passed away April 12, 2006, in Norman, Okla. Joe was born October 30, 1918, near Fort Towson, Okla., to Leona Cowan Stone and Robert Stone. He was the third of ten children.

He attended school in Fort Towson and Skellytown, Texas, until 1933, when he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. He worked at a CCC camp in Arizona until joining the Army on October 2, 1939. Following completion of basic training in November, 1939, he was stationed in Hawaii and was in charge of a cold storage subsistence plant as a member of the Army Quartermaster Corp for the next 49 months. Joe was transferred to a Military Police outfit and guarded prisoners of war in Patchhogue, NY, from 1944 until his discharge in 1945. Joe attained the rank of Technical Sergeant and awarded a Good Conduct Medal, AP Service Ribbon and One Bronze Service Star, an American Defense Service Ribbon and One Bronze Star and an Expert Rifle Badge.

He married Geraldine Medford of Fort Towson, Okla., on November 27, 1944 and had two sons. He went to work in Stinnett, TX, for Huber Oil Co. Later he worked for Amoco Petroleum Co until retiring in 1989 after 27 years. Joe was a Christian since a young man and joined the Baptist Church in 1965.Joe and Jerry built a home on Lake Raymond Gary, when he retired, to be near their families. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and working with the Senior Citizens and the Baptist Church until 1993. They moved back to Duncan, Okla., to be nearer their sons, later moving to Oklahoma City when Joe’s health began to fail.

Survivors include Jerry, his wife of 61 years, sisters Rosalee Morris, Vivian Gibson, Edna Cawley, Alice Davis and brother, Bob Stone. Two sons, Don and wife Kathy of Purcell, Okla., and William Joe and wife Louella of Oklahoma City. Grandchildren, Debra Stone and daughter Cheyenne, Denton, Texas, William Stone, Purcell, Okla., Vanessa Baty and son Nolan, Oklahoma City, Mark and Clayton Stone, Oklahoma City, Michael Stone and wife Renee and their children Brooke, Michael and Samantha, Queen Creek, Ariz.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2006, at First Baptist Church in Fort Towson with Reverend Bob Thornburg officiating. Interment was in Fort Towson Cemetery.
