Levena Frances (Oakes) McFarland

Mrs. M. N. (Levena Frances Oakes) McFarland, whose ancestors came to Oklahoma when the grandmother, Harriett Everidge, walked the Trail of Tears from Mississippi at the age of five, died at 7:10 o'clock Tuesday morning in Memorial Hospital.

Lampton - Mills Funeral Home will announce service arrangements. The family is seeing friends at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Thomas L. Wheelus, 1007 East Jefferson.

Widow of the Rev. M. N. McFarland, long-time Choctaw County Baptist preacher, Mrs. McFarland had been critically ill in recent weeks.

She was born in old Ervin community, southeast of today's Hugo, on Aug. 25, 1894, a daughter of Charles Oakes and the former Margaret Ann Buchanan. She lived all her life in Choctaw County, she and the Rev. Mr. McFarland being married Feb. 13, 1916, at Shoat Springs Church.

She was one of 21 children and served her family as its unofficial historian. She was a member of the Oak Grove Church, where her late husband was pastor for a number of years.

She is survived by six sons and daughters, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The former are David McFarland, of the home east of Hugo; Mrs. Thomas L. Wheelus, Hugo; Mrs. Margie Bell, Denison, Tex., Lawrence McFarland, San Pablo, Calif., E L. (Sug) McFarland, El Cerrito, Calif., and Malcolm McFarland, Pollock Pines, Calif.

Four surviving sisters, all living in Hugo, are Mrs. Belle Bennett, Mrs. Harriett Cody, Mrs. Martha Smith, and Mrs. Florence Dodson.
