Carl Sherman

Carl Sherman, age 86, longtime Idabel businessman and philanthropist passed away at his residence in Idabel on Friday, May 19, 2006. He was born in Hugo on December 2, 1919. He was the Hugo High School valedictorian in 1936. He attended the University of Oklahoma. He graduated in 1941 and was preparing to enter Harvard Law School when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He changed his plans.

Sherman served more than four years in the U.S. Navy. He was commissioned an ensign in 1942, through officer candidate school, and was discharged in 1946 after attaining the rank of LT (0-3).After discharge from the Navy, he spent several months with his family, who operated a dry goods store for many years in Hugo.

Preston Colvins enticed Sherman to move to Idabel later in 1946 and helped him finance the purchase of a dry goods store located in the two-story building on the south side of S & H Department Store by the alley (last operated by Donna Hill as "Donna’s Dress Shop")At one time, Sherman owned six shoe stores in Dallas, Denton, and Denison, Texas, as well as Oklahoma City.

Along with partners he helped start South Park Shopping Center in Broken Bow, the former site of a Dierks Saw Mill.

His longtime partner Larry Oster still operates the Oklahoma City Store.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Bertha Sherman; a brother Abe Sherman; a sister Anna Maye Sherman; and special friend and the love of his life, Martha Ann Johnson.

Carl Sherman is survived by his adopted daughter and her husband, Julie and Dale Fisher of Idabel; adopted grandchildren and spouses, Ryan and Sarah Coleman of Van Alstyne, Texas, Reagan and Kyle Morris of Plano, Texas, and Lacey Coleman of Idabel; adopted great-grandchildren, Blake Morris and Rilyn Coleman; special friends, Wesley and Paula Cantrell of Paris, Texas, and Rex Chandler of Idabel; a special caregiver, Jeanette Hightower of Idabel; many other friends and business associates.

Services were held Monday, May 22, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Conley-White Chapel in Idabel. Interment was in the Denison Cemetery with Rex Chandler and Wesley Cantrell officiating. The family received friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2006 at the funeral home.
