Phelps-Inglis Family of Welch and Cardin Oklahoma   754

Query posted by Gabel, S on October 03, 2005 for , PHELPS, INGLIS, HOUSER, VAUGHN, RALSON

I am currently researching the family of William PHELPS and Mamie INGLIS.

Mamie INGLIS was born June 1877 in Missouri to William M. INGLIS and Missouri A. RALSON. She married William PHELPS (unknown date and place) and they had a son, William Washington PHELPS, born Dec 1897 in Indian Territory. A second son, Elmer, was born May 1998, also in Indian Territory. Children, Alta, John, Claude and Clara followed, all born in Oklahoma. I believe the family lived first in Welch, Craig County but moved to Narcissa Township in Ottawa County by 1910 (1910 Fed Census). They were in Cardin by 1930 (1930 Fed Census). Daughter Eula was born c 1912, with son Everett c 1914 and Paul c 1919.

Alta married a VAUGHN and Clara married a HOUSER.

Mamie died in February 1937 and is buried in the William's cemetery in Welch, Craig County, Oklahoma.

Hope someone can help with this family. I do have limited information about Mamie INGLIS' birth family and will share gladly.

Thomas, I checked and there are no Daniel's buried at White Oak except a few just in the last few years. I will do some checking for you and see if I can locate the grave at some area cemeteries. I will get back with you. If you can come up with anything else about this just email me at datune@aol.com.

Pheasant Hill School   745

Query posted by Boland, Catherine on October 24, 2005 for , SCHWARTZ, CHAMBERLAIN

My father and his brothers and sisters attended Pheasant Hill School in the out-skirts of Vinita city limits approximately 1946-1950. I am looking for a picture of the building when it was still a school. It is currently standing as a residence, but I would be interested in finding a picture or a resource where I can find a picture of the old school building for him. I appreciate any help with this.

Thank you,
Cathy Schwartz-Boland

Looking for relatives of Eliza Jane Jenkins Bell   746

Query posted by Cjlaird on October 31, 2005 for , JENKINS, BELL, FRY, SULLIVAN, KING, EDWARDS, NORTHCUT, THOMPSON, LOPER, HARMON, ALLEY, SIPPI, CAUTHER, YACKLEY, RHYAN

I am researching my husband's grandfather's family. It has been a challenge. Facts that have turned up:

1. Eliza Jane Jenkins Bell was the mother of one of my husband's grandfather, William Jonah Robertson.

2. On 17 January 1873, Elizabeth Jane Jenkins, age 14, married John O. Bell at Carroll County Arkansas.

3. In 1875, Eliza's mother died in or shortly after childbirth.

4. On 4 February 1876, Eliza's daughter Ida Bell was born.

5. Eliza's father remarried in September 1876 to Tennessee Alabama Dunlap and a daughter was born (Lenetta A. Jenkins).

6. On 18 September 1878, John O. Bell filed for divorce, kicked Eliza out of the home, and kept the child.

7. On the 1880 census, John O. Bell was living at Osage Arkansas with his widowed mother, 2 unmarried sisters (Laura and Margret Frances), and his 4-year-old daughter, Ida Bell.

8. On the 1880 census, Eliza J. Jenkins is living with her father, stepmother, 3 siblings, and a half-sister in Carrollton township, Arkansas, right across the section from my husband's great-grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Robertson.

9. Some time during the 1880's, Eliza Jenkins has 2 sons named William Jonah Robertson and Charlie Robertson.

The information that came down through Jonah's descendants indicated that Jonah and Charlie may have been twins. Jonah never discussed his parents - neither one - and talked of being an orphan, Charlie put up for adoption, and Jonah going to live in a foster home and being raised by a minister. Charlie reportedly lived in Oklahoma, and Jonah claimed to have lived around McKinney Texas - but we can't seem to find their names on the 1900 census anywhere.

Jonah died in 1941 - age unknown, as he is known to have lied about his age and place of birth. None of his eleven children knew the identity of his parents - that information came from his social security application that was obtained two years ago. During their lives, none of Jonah's eleven children knew that he had 9 half siblings through his father's three other marriages, or 10 half-siblings through his mother's other marriage.

At the time of the death of Ida Bell Fry in Durant Oklahoma in June 1968, the children were listed for the funeral -
Dorothy Sullivan, Millie King, Effie Edwards, Iola Belle Northcut, Flora Cox Thompson, Gladys Loper, Bessie Harmon, Ruth Alley, Gene Fry, Vic Fry. Five lived at Durant OK, and the others were living in other areas.
and her four sisters were listed as Eula Sippi, Minnie Cauther or Cauthen, Bessie Yackley, and Willie Rhyan. Two of these ladies lived at Vinita (Sippi & Cauther), and one lived at Ft. Gibson (Rhyan).

We hope to find descendants of these people, who are all descendants of John O Bell, to find out who (if anyone) knows what happened to Ida's mother, Eliza Jane Jenkins Bell.

If anyone can offer any help - please contact James or Claudia Glass at Hutchinson KS by e-mail or a reply post

Scovel at K.O.H.I., Vinita   749

Query posted by Tilson, Carol on November 02, 2005 for , SCOVEL, MORRISON

I'm trying to locate a fellow named Noel Scovel whose WWI Draft Registration Card identifies him as a "Patient, K.O.H.I., Vinita, Okla."

Can anyone translate K.O.H.I.? Or perhaps run across Noel in a local cemetery? It's quite possible he never left Craig County. I've never found him on a later census and, by 1920, his wife, Stella, was married to an Arthur Morrison and living in Kay Co., OK, with her and Noel's two sons: Adrian and Floy [sic]?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

It should have read OK HII. Which is Okahoma Hospital for the Insane. It is now called Eastern State Hospital. They do have a cemetery there. I will see if I can find the listing for that area.

Thanks so much for your response, Maggie. That's kinda what I suspected the initials HII. meant. If you have a chance to check for a cemetery listing for Noel Scovel, it would be greatly appreciated. I'd sure like to run him to ground for once and for all.

Hi. My father leased a coal mine from a J.A. Livingston in Pope county Arkansas. I'm trying to find out if there was any other connection, other than the lease. Dad had a coal mine west of Vinita, when he was killed in an auto accident in 1929. The Arkansas lease was signed on January 17, 1925.
Thank You.
