James P. Sneed was born in Brass Town, Georgia, September 7, 1860.   His parents names were Arch & Mary (Nee Bly) Sneed.  Mr. Sneed was Cherokee Indian.  They had no ancestors living in Oklahoma.  Mr. Sneed was a farmer.  His father was too old to take part in the war.

Interview

I came to the Cherokee Nation, February 17, 1891.  I came on the emigrant car.  C.H., or Campbell Taylor, was the sponsor.  There were twenty-two of us come on the emigrant car.

I come here from Murphy, N.C., and married down there.  My wife's name was Dora Plemons.  I run a livery stable in Cherokee Co., N.C..  Murphy was the town.  Mr. Campbell Taylor came out there and talked us into coming out to the Cherokee Nation.  I did not want to come, but Mr. Taylor told me I could get my allotment if I would co me, but when I got here I was too late.  I did not get any land and I am one-fourth Cherokee.  My mother was a half-breed.

The principal teams in N.C., when I left there, were Ox teams.  They plowed with a Georgia turning plow.  They were reversible, made to plow hill sides.   They used sleds to gather corn in the hill sides which were too steep for a wagon.

Signed: James P. Sneed
