| FORNEY,
Edward Carl Researcher: Kathy Fenton Date: January 9, 2007 I am researching Edward Carl FORNEY, born ca.
1854 in Indiana. Birthdate and place are based on US census
records, as well as information having to do with his wife,
Rebecca Cagle FORNEY Barnes, who was the second wife of my
great-grandfather, Cassius McDonald Barnes (who was a governor of
Oklahoma Territory, 1897-1901). In addition, the Ponca City
chapter of the DAR put out a book in 1939 entitled, The Last
Run, Kay County, Oklahoma, 1893, and in that there is an
account of a "Sooner" dispute by R.L. Winebrenner entitled "The Claim I
Lost." This first person account describes Winebrenner's
problems with land he claimed during the 1893 run into the Cherokee
Strip, with the other party involved (who ultimately won the land, both
at first, and later, on appeal to the Supreme Court...) being Edward
Carl FORNEY.
In addition to the account of the Sooner dispute
between FORNEY
and Winebrenner, there is a person by his
name ("Edward C. Forney") found on the 1860 US census for
Indiana, age 6 and living in the Van Buren township, Grant county,
household of Samuel Doyle, a farmer. Information in the 1941
obituary of Rebecca Cagle FORNEY Barnes
says that she married, as her first husband, Edward Carl FORNEY, when
she was 16 and that he was much older than she (Rebecca was born in
1867). The obituary goes on to say that Rebecca and
Edward (who was apparently at least sometimes called by his middle
name, "Carl") worked as newspaper writers, promoting new towns
in Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. The 1910 US census for New
Mexico shows that Rebecca is a widow at that time (May 1910), living
next door to her brother, Mathew Cagle, and that the
father of her only surviving child (of three), a son, Victor E.
(1901-1961), was born in Indiana. In August of 1910, several
months after that census had been taken, Rebecca (a lawyer, like her
father had also been, and teacher by this time; in fact, she
was the first female attorney to be heard before the US Supreme Court)
married my great-grandfather, Cassius McDonald Barnes, in
Chicago. Barnes apparently adopted Victor at that time, and
afterward he was always known as "Victor E. Barnes."
Within my family there had been speculation over the
years that perhaps Barnes might actually have been the
biological father of Rebecca's son, Victor. However, recent
y-dna genealogy testing has proven that could not be the
case. Still, I would very much like to find the death date
for FORNEY.
My research focus is actually primarily to do with Cassius McDonald
Barnes, about whose "life and times" I am in the process of writing a
book (and thus, I also am interested in FORNEY, first
husband of the second wife of Barnes, and as such, part of those "life
and times"...). Some accounts having to do with Rebecca and
her marriage to my great-grandfather call her a widow at the time of
her marriage to him, but some say she was divorced. Despite
the results of our y-dna testing, it would be interesting to know just
what her marital status was at the time of Victor's
conception. Unfortunately however, the FORNEY family has
remained "stubbornly unfound" on the 1900 US census (which was probably
taken right about the time that conception of Victor, born in 1901,
took place...). Rebecca had a large number of siblings and
many of them also settled in the Oklahoma/Kansas area. I have
searched all areas in Oklahoma Territory, Kansas, etc. (any place I
either thought they might be, or had previously found even one of
Rebecca's siblings...), ca. 1900 (both using a search engine
and also manually scrolling through...) but have found no trace of
either Edward Carl or Rebecca Cagle FORNEY
at that time. I suppose it is possible that they just weren't
home when the enumerator passed their way! At this point, I
don't know...
Any concrete information on Edward Carl FORNEY would be much
appreciated!
Thanks. Kathy Fenton Virginia Beach, VA |

| STORM Date: July 20, 2006 Researcher: Jessica My name is Jessica and I have just begun to research my family's history in Oklahoma. At this point I know only two things. My grandmothers maiden name is Storm and I believe she was born in OK. I believe her mothers name was Rose Storm. The other clue that I have is that her family founded/won Kay county. My uncle has the original document issued by the US government which he was willed after my Grandparents passed. I have never seen the document, however I am waiting for my mom to get a photocopy or picture of it from him to aid in my research. She did say that she doesn't remember there being any names on the document. I have searched online and haven't been able to find the names of the original founders. I thought that that information may be much easier for you to retrieve being that you live in Oklahoma. I would greatly appreciate any assistance you could provide for me. Sincerely, Jessica |
