CHARLES HENRY TULLY
Hi, I am Charles H. Tully, your parents know
me as the local merchant and lawyer, but originally I came to the Indian Territory
as a teacher in 1889. I was not long though, when I hitched up with C. E. Foley
and we partnered in the mercantile business until he decided to go off and form
the Bank. About this time, I began to collect and read law books and by the
blessing of god, on July 12, 1907, I passed the bar in the State of Oklahoma.
Even though I was over forty years old I was able to set up a partnership with
Judge Collier and later Judge VanCourt and my practice flourished. Later, I
became very involved in promoting the Enabling Act, and was one of this area's
representatives to Washington to lobby for the passage of the act. It passed
June 14, 1906 and I was delighted. After it's passage I was active in the new
Democratic Party as a member of the Central Committee.
When World War I, occurred I looked around for the best way I could serve my nation and became the head of the local Red Cross. I was also very active in the Liberty loan program securing funding for the war effort, and I was chairman of the local Draft Exemption Board.
I never was a candidate for public office, but my friends and supporters placed me in the Eufaula Mayor's office for two terms.
My wife Gertrude and I have enjoyed our lives in Eufaula and appreciate all the neighbors that have provided so much support over the years.
